Florian Lesage is a specialist of ion transport and cell excitability. One of his main contributions is the discovery of a novel class of potassium channels that produce background conductances which are a major determinant of resting potential and input resistance, two key components of neuronal excitability. These channels are promising targets for the development of novel classes of anaesthetics, analgesics, and drugs against addictions and depression. In collaboration with clinicians of Nice, Paris and Lyon, his group has also designed and validated a macroarray of ion channels for the detection of autoantibodies in autoimmune disorders affecting brain excitability.

Florian Lesage is the author of 13 international patents and more than 120 publications which have received over 13,000 citations  (h-index 57) according to Google Scholar (May 2016). He has been or is member of national scientific boards for the Conseil National des Universités (CNU section 69, 2012-2016), INSERM (CSS6  2008-2012 and Scientific Council 2012-2017) and Agence Nationale de La Recherche (Chairman of CE16, Mol. and Cell. Neurosci., 2016).

Florian Lesage is the director and scientific head of the LabEx ICST. ICST is a national consortium funded by the “Investissements d’Avenir” government programme aiming to provide extra support to innovative research (16 teams, 100 researchers, 8 M€). ICST is dedicated to the identification and validation of new targets of therapeutic interest, and to the development of new techniques to study ion channels. The project was ranked 1st/195 by the International Jury (all sciences competing). Since 2012, the teams of ICST have published more than 250 original articles and reviews in prestigious scientific journals including Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Communication, Cell, Cancer Cell, Cell Reports, Neuron, Plos Biol, J Cell Biol, PNAS.
