Jeanick Brisswalter elected President of Université Côte d'Azur

On Thursday January 9, 2020 Jeanick Brisswalter was elected President of Université Côte d'Azur by the executive board with 31 votes out of 38 (7 blank ballots). He became the first president of the new Université Côte d'Azur, an experimental institution that replaces the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis and the Community of Universities and Institutions (ComUE). This marks a decisive step in the construction of an internationally recognized integrated university, intensive in research, and active in the growth of its region.

Jeanick Brisswalter has been a full professor since 1996. After completing a Ph.D. in physiology at the laboratory of adaptation physiology of the Paris V University specialized in exercise physiology applied to high level sports, he began his career as a researcher with the National Institute for Sport, Expertise and Performance (INSEP). In 1994, he joined the faculty of the University of Poitiers, and in 1999 moved on to the University of Toulon, where he headed the sports ergonomics laboratory. In 2010, he accepted a position at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis where he created and directed the Laboratory for Human Motor Skills, Education, Sports and Health (LAMHESS).

His research focused on the management of substrates during exercise and their interaction with the brain’s operation, with applications in high performance sports or aging. He has published a large number of international articles in the fields of exercise physiology, neuroscience and psychophysiology and has served as an expert in several national and international assessment bodies and committees in the fields of life and health sciences, public health and sports sciences. He was dean of the Faculty of Sports Sciences from 2014 until 2016 when he became vice president of the research committee of the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis and vice president of research for the Université Côte d'Azur community of universities and institutions (CoMue).


His goal as president is to maintain the momentum created by the UCAJEDI IDEX project, strengthen the position of Université Côte d'Azur as a major player in the region and as an internationally recognized university that fulfills all of its missions and meets the highest standards.


The policy he will implement has four main objectives:
• Strengthen the ties between research, innovation and valorization, and thereby develop the scientific potential of Université Côte d'Azur founded on excellence, transdisciplinarity and innovation.
• Confirm the leadership role of Université Côte d'Azur in the development of the Côte d'Azur region, in close collaboration with the local, national and international community.
• Encourage excellence in the academic pursuits of students and professionals, and provide them with the knowledge and skills they need to solve the complex problems of today's world.
• Develop university life within the new scope of Université Côte d'Azur, by improving working conditions and stimulating campus life through culture and sports, promoting the university's heritage and encouraging all the actions that allow the different members of the university community to be committed to their work and to flourish in their job.
Jeanick Brisswalter will appoint a team of vice presidents and project managers in the coming days.
