Quarterly Newsletter #3-2018

One chapter closes and another one opens!

You are reading the first DS4H newsletter!

This is an evolution of what you knew before as the Labex UCN@Sophia newsletter. Even though the Labex continues to deliver the core expertise and the internationally recognized excellence in research that lies at the heart of the Digital Systems for Humans (DS4H) graduate school and research project, we will through this new newsletter enlarge our vision according to the rich ecosystem of DS4H.

Winner of the PIA3 competitive call for projects on “Ecoles Universitaires de Recherche” (EUR), i.e. call on “graduate schools”, DS4H is a 10-year program covering graduate and PhD-level education curriculums organization, multidisciplinary research in the domains of digital systems, and innovation. UCN@Sophia is fully integrated in this program and benefits from an 8 years extension. DS4H is also tightly connected to the UCAJEDI IDEX Academy of Excellence on “Networks, Information and Digital Society” (NIDS), with which it shares a vision of research on the different facets of digital systems and their social implications. DS4H was the only EUR program centered on digital systems awarded at the national level, putting the Nice Sophia Antipolis territory at the heart of their development.

Labex/NIDS Academy/DS4H Scientific Day The UCA Academy of excellence NIDS and the newly created EUR Digital Systems for Humans (including the Labex UCN@Sophia) organized their first joint scientific event on September, 10. In a context of increasing personal data generation and thus increasing tracking possibilities by the large Internet companies, the event proposed a focus on Web Privacy, with presentations of Nataliia Bielova (Inria) and Armand Heslot (CNIL). This new University year beginning was also the opportunity to make an update on the latest developments which led to the launch of DS4H. The 8 latest Academy NIDS funded projects were pitched, showing the wide range of topics covered by its multidisciplinary scope. Videos and presentations are available here.

3IA The academic actors of Nice Sophia Antipolis are preparing an application to host an interdisciplinary institute of artificial intelligence (3IA) initiated and supported by Université Côte d'Azur, the CNRS, Inria, Mines ParisTech and EURECOM. This project responds to the first call for proposals of the plan on artificial intelligence launched by French president Emmanuel Macron at the end of March following the mathematician Cédric Villani’s report on the topic. The UCA laboratories and higher education partners are strongly involved in this application. While building on the reputation of the territory in terms of high-tech, the project can also count on a new asset: DS4H, which disruptive program covers current strategic topics including A. I. and Data Sciences and which is the only "EUR" operating in the field of digital sciences in France. The call for interest closed on September 28. Five to six institutes should be created, with funding of 100 M€ by 2022. Read more

DS4H Graduate school

D-Day for DS4H Graduate school 120 Master students were invited on September, 21 to get information on the new framework in which their master curricula in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Digital Strategy and Digital Law & IP are now inserted. This day was the official launch of the Digital Systems for Humans Graduate school.

Complementing the different Master specialization tracks, a rich variety of minors and project options were presented, making the DS4H training and education offer unique in France. DS4H aims at developing student skills to face the 21st century challenges. Its program invite students to open to new disciplines and acquire a broader vision of the complexity of problems they tackle. It includes soft skills development, co-working on business and social problems, in-lab or in-industry training, and multi-disciplinary projects management. It strengthens students’ involvement in their education programs, with the need to choose a personalized curriculum and to decide of their future profile, whether they aim at becoming engineers, scientists, teachers or innovators.

We welcome the students and wish them a very successful year!
