Introduction

A degree in Literature provides a solid literary culture, but also competencies in speech and communication, in text commentary, in critical thinking, and in argumentation. Students acquire flexibility and a capacity to adapt that is much appreciated in most of the careers open to them (see below). Students must love to write and show intellectual curiosity.

The Bachelor's program in Literature provides the foundations of the discipline: French literature and French language from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, comparative literature (including an introduction to European and world literature and civilization), the relationship between images and literature, writing and literary translation and (optionally) Greco-Roman Antiquity literatures, languages and civilizations. Along with this solid literary foundation, students acquire all the competencies listed in the national reference documents for this program. Students in the Bachelor's program not only learn to master transversal skills (autonomy, adaptation, how to organize their work and use the tools, etc.), but also skills specific to literary training (fine skills in analyzing language, texts and images, editorial qualities, critical reading, a strong literary and general culture, translation and literary writing, teaching methods, knowledge of publishing and the book production chain) and skills in the specific third-year tracks (middle or secondary school teaching). During their three years of study, students identify their career path and prepare for further study or entrance exams leading mostly to jobs in teaching, research, publishing, archiving, journalism, writing, and the public service.

The Bachelor's program in Literature provides a general education that leads to progressive specialization. In addition, from the first to third year, students take a transversal unit that is mandatory for all UNS students. Each semester of the first year (L1), in addition to this unit, students take a unit that covers French literature, French language and discovery of the ancient worlds, and three electives from the Literature, Arts, Human Sciences cluster, two of which can be in Literature. Each semester of the second year (L2), in addition to the transversal unit, students take two units within their discipline. One is a core course, shared by all students. The other is either in Modern or in Classical Literature, and it determines the future track. Students take two additional development units, which expand on the knowledge of the first-year discovery units and can be in Literature. Students may replace one of these units with a pre-professional unit that prepares for teaching. In both semesters of the third year (L3), students take the transversal unit and courses that are all within their discipline. Two specific tracks prepare for a Master's degree in teaching (first or second level).
