The courses are articulated around a pedagogic device that allows students to tackle several different fields (French, Latin, Greek and Occitan languages and literatures, general and comparative literature, linguistics and automatic language processing, documentation), to introduce the methods and major issues of these disciplinary fields.


The scientific and professional objectives of the three master’s tracks are as follows: Classical and modern letters track This track introduces up a deep scientific approach to the functioning of the language and the phenomenon of literary creation, from ancient sources to the contemporary period, in the French and non-Francophone domains. An “à la carte” course system also provides complementary knowledge in the field of documentation, language science, theater studies and journalism. Classes are offered on campus, but distance learning is also possible. Worlds of the document: supports, contents, mediations track This track aims to give graduates in the field of humanities, or other disciplines according to their professional preference, the high-level scientific qualification necessary for the business of accessibility of managed information by all documentary structures: heritage or public reading libraries, specialized documentation centers (museum or corporate) and archives. It ensures excellent professional integration thanks to the versatility of the program and to numerous local partnerships that ensure rich and diversified internship opportunites. Linguistic, digital processing of text and cognitive processes track This track stimulates the ability to think about the heard and produced language, both orally and in writing, instructed in the detailed identification of language standards, in the understanding and management of the implied and presupposed as well as in the knowledge and identification of language problems in young children and foreign learners. It also provides in-depth linguistic knowledge about language functioning, structure and acquisition, as well as familiarity with linguistic theorization. It also provides the scientific qualification necessary for the creation, management, analysis and use of linguistic databases ensuring professional integration into the field of the language industry.


The training program is centered on a Professional and Research Project (PPR). All UE are made up of "à la carte" electives for the student throughout the program. Within the classics and modern letterstrack, this "à la carte" system allows students to acquire complementary knowledge in the field of documentation, language science, theater studies and journalism. For foreign students (25% of enrollments in M2) the master's in Letters attests to their knowledge of French and European language, literature and civilization. It allows graduates to be recruited as a teacher of French in most countries of Eastern Europe and North Africa, in secondary education or higher education as an assistant. Training modules on research methodology and literature searchin M1 and M2 will be generally offered as distance learning. As part of the research, the Letters program works in connection with the following laboratories: BCL - Bases, Corpus, Language CTEL - Transdisciplinary Center for Epistemology of Literature CEPAM - Cultures and Environments in Prehistory, Antiquity, and the Middle Ages LIRCES - Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Stories, Cultures and Societies
