Introduction

Progress have been made in the field of brain science, which represents a major public health challenge. The Cellular and Integrated Neuroscience (NCI) track aims to provide students with solid skills in fundamental and clinical neuroscience.

The courses are multidisciplinary, ranging from molecules to behavior, taking into account the varying degrees of complexity of communication within the nervous system. Students wishing to complete their training or strengthen their existing skills may also take optional courses selected from the common core of courses offered in the other tracks. The teaching areas covered are all represented in the host laboratories affiliated with the Université Côte d'Azur. The instructors in this track, both researchers and lecturer-researchers, work on the subject they teach, and the teaching materials are recent scientific publications in English, allowing students to be as up-to-date as possible with recent advances in the fields studied.

Why choose the NCI course

The Cellular and Integrated Neurosciences course features:

  • A comprehensive neuroscience education program with a wide selection of international elective courses (EMN track, International InterIdex Master's degree).
  • Significant practical experience through 11 months of internships over the two years of training in research laboratories or local/French/international biotech/medtech industries.
  • Opportunity to obtain the CESU B animal experimentation certification offered as part of the program, essential for preclinical research.
  • Training provided by researchers, lecturer-researchers, clinicians, and industry professionals.

M1 cohort 2025-2027 : 01/09/25 to 30/06/26
M2 cohort 2024-2026 : 01/09/25 to 30/06/26

During the 2 years of your master's degree, you will have to follow 550 hours of classes/tutorials/practical work and a maximum of 1500 hours of compulsory internship according to the following breakdown:

M1: 5-month internship, starting in February 2026
M2: 6-month internship, starting in January 2026

These internships can be carried out in a private or public research laboratory, or in a company.

Thanks to a solid foundation in neurophysiology, the objectives of this program are to understand, identify, and anticipate developments in the field of neuroscience.

The objectives of the Cellular and Integrated Neuroscience program are:
  • To provide qualifying training that can be used for further study at a doctoral level or for professional integration in both academia and industry.
  • To offer quality training in neuroscience at various conceptual levels of analysis (molecular, cellular, developmental, neural circuits, behavioral) in both normal and pathological contexts.

The Cellular and Integrated Neuroscience program features:
  • A comprehensive neuroscience education program with a wide range of optional teaching units
  • 5-month internships in the first year of a Master's program and 6-month internships in the second year of a Master's program
  • CESU B training in animal experimentation, essential for preclinical research
  • Training provided by researchers and lecturer-researchers from Université Côte d'Azur and other university centers (Sorbonne University, University of Bordeaux, University of Rouen, University of Lausanne, etc.)

Prerequisite

Studients selection is primarily based on the first year of the Master's program, based on students' career plans and academic records.

In terms of prerequisites, candidates must possess skills in the following areas:
  • Major physiological functions
  • Neural physiology and nervous system function
  • General anatomical organization of the nervous system

Validation of skills blocks :
This program does not allow for one or more skills blocks.

This program is aimed at students with a bachelor's degree in biology or a dual degree with a biology component. Third-year undergraduate students may hold a DUT (university technology diploma) or other qualification.

Conditions of applications

  • Applications for the first year of the Master's program must be submitted online, from February 17, 2025, to March 16, 2026, on the MonMaster platform.
     
  • Admission to the second year of the Master's program is by applying on the e-candidat platform (dates provided soon)

The application must include the following:
  • Undergraduate diploma granting access to the Master's program or certificate of successful completion of the diploma
  • Transcripts of records for each year of the Bachelor's program or the undergraduate diploma granting access to the Master's program
  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae
  • A cover letter describing your career plan
  • Letter(s) of recommendation for students not enrolled at Université Côte d'Azur. Students pursuing a Bachelor's degree at Université Côte d'Azur are not required to provide a letter of recommendation. Students may, if they wish, include contact information for professors or researchers who agree to recommend them on their CVs.

The steering committee will select the applications best suited to the Genetics and Development program and will announce its decision via the e-candidate platform.

Program

The M1 program is structured around three mandatory teaching units. During these units, certain topics covered in the third-year Bachelor's degree will be explored in greater depth. Students will also be required to study several scientific articles throughout the year, and they must therefore be proficient in written English.

The M2 program is also structured around three mandatory teaching units and covers clinical aspects related to the fundamental studies of the pathologies studied.

  Enseignements méthodologiques:

Semester 2

6-month research laboratory internship

A dissertation is required at the end of each M1 and M2 internship, as well as two oral exams per year (one at the start of the internship and one at the end of the internship). The assessment is based on the written report, the two oral exams, and the supervisor's assessment, out of a total of 30 ECTS.

Students guided by their teachers can also consider an M1 or M2 internship abroad.

The lessons will be assessed through continuous assessment and final assessment.

The Cellular and Integrated Neuroscience track targets the following skills:
  • Critically analyze and interpret experimental data by developing a structured argument

  • Conduct a scientific project while effectively leveraging the skills and knowledge acquired during the programme

After completing their Master's degree, the majority of NCI graduates pursue a doctorate, primarily in laboratories in the region, but also elsewhere in France or abroad. A link to the medical sector is also possible.

Some students pursue additional training in business or management to acquire a dual skill set.

Business sector or job

Graduate students can begin research or development projects directly after completing their Master's degree. They can apply to public laboratories, university hospitals, technology platforms, and R&D centers in biotechnology or pharmaceutical companies, for positions such as:
  • Clinical Research Associate
  • PhD Student at INSERM
  • Engineering Assistant

Tuition fees for national diplomas are set annually at the national level.
- €250 for Master's students in initial training (rate as of January 29, 2025)
- For students returning to their studies, contact the service de formation continue (CPF support possible)
 

  • Student and Campus Life Contribution (CVEC), a mandatory processe

By registering at the Côte d'Azur University, you will also have to pay a cotisation vie étudiante et de campus (CVEC - "Student Life and Campus Contribution) with the CROUS prior to any registration. For 2024-2025, the amount of the contribution is €103.
