Introduction

The Migration Studies track aims to train future experts in the fields of migration, asylum, integration, and anti-discrimination policies. It is a program of excellence preparing students for careers in international organizations, NGOs, local and national administrations, the media, or for pursuing doctoral studies.

The Migration Studies track focuses on a crucial issue in today’s world: the impact of migration and diversity (cultural, religious, etc.) on contemporary societies. The movement of people, ideas, and practices, as well as the growing diversification of societies, has had major effects on legislation (national, European, and international), public policies, and both individual and collective social experiences. The establishment of this multidisciplinary Master’s program in Nice, a border and cosmopolitan city, benefits from a strong tradition of research in the history and sociology of migration, as well as from a rich network of associations working on these issues.

The Master’s program is based on an active learning approach combining lectures, seminars, and practical applications in order to develop skills in conducting empirical research, producing and promoting rigorous analyses, and managing institutional or non-profit projects.

The Migration Studies track offers progressive specialization within the Master of Social Sciences. In the first year (M1), the program mainly focuses on deepening disciplinary knowledge and methodological tools in sociology (with an opening toward anthropology). It also provides an initial introduction to migration studies.

In the second year (M2), the program is entirely dedicated to migration-related issues, approached through an interdisciplinary perspective combining law, political science, and social sciences, as well as international viewpoints.
It is the only Master’s-level (M2) program in the field of migration studies taught in English in France.

Key Features of the Master’s Program :
  • A second year (M2) taught entirely in English
  • A critical perspective on social issues and migration, developed through the mastery of sociological tools
  • The combined contributions of law, political science, and sociology
  • Academic and professional lecturers specialized in migration-related issues
  • Internationally recognized visiting professors
  • A location in a region strongly affected by migration processes
  • Practical applications during courses (field visits, legal clinics, etc.) and during the internship
  • Integration into the research activities of partner laboratories (URMIS, ERMES, LADIE)
  • International experiences through study, research, or internship periods in Europe and beyond
  • A network of international partners for exchange opportunities in Europe (EuMigs network) and outside Europe
  • A network of alumni and guest speakers that facilitates professional integration

Partnership

ERMES (Research Team on the Mutations of Europe and its Societies, linked to the Department of Political Science) brings together political scientists, public law specialists and legal historians, who question the construction and transformation of territories and political identities, and the evolutions of the European political and legal space, especially in relation to migration processes.

LADIE (Research Center in International and European Law) focuses on migrants and refugees’ rights, international humanitarian law, human rights law, security issues, the fight against transnational crime, the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union, EU immigration policy. It took part in several European projects, including an INTERREG program funded by the European Union on “The EU and the Law of Migrants and Refugees”, in collaboration with the Institute of International Humanitarian Law of San Remo-Geneva (2008-2012).

URMIS (Migrations and Society Research Unit, linked to the Department of Sociology), was one of the first research centers in France to develop social science approaches to migrations and interethnic relations. It is a joint research center of the University of Nice, the University of Paris Diderot, the Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD) and the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). URMIS brings together researchers from various disciplines and is a unique space for debate and comparison, while also sharing a common theoretical understanding of national, ethnic and racial groups as social constructions.
