Fil de l'eau - 2017~2019

Démarche de financement au "Fil de l'Eau" (suspendue)

Academy 3 of UCAJEDI (description of Academy 3 recalled at the end of this letter) wishes to give you increased flexibility by initiating a “fil de l'eau” funding tool. This “fil de l’eau” funding tool will be opened all year long.

It is expected that the submitted proposals address the major concerns of Academy 3, whose ambitions include:
  • To monitor and better observe Space and the Earth. This might involve the development of new instruments and data processing techniques for ground-based and in-space observations.
  • To evaluate natural and anthropogenic hazards on land, at sea, and in near space, and foster more efficient approaches for risk management. These hazards include, but are not restricted to, extreme natural phenomena, industrial, sanitary and ecological hazards.
  • To enhance innovative approaches in integrated modeling between the physical, systemic, and societal bodies and processes.
  • To develop resilience strategies based on individual and collective responses and actions.

The submitted proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
  • It is suggested that proposals don’t demand more than 10 k€. Funding can be used for operating expenses, equipment, and/or personnel. Those who have already benefited from Academy 3 support in the current year will not be given priority.
  • Urgency of the request that justifies the "fil de l'eau" procedure.
  • Coherence of the project with the thematic priorities of Academy 3; Strength, visibility and attractiveness of the project, nationally/internationally; Significance and innovative characteristics of expected results;
  • Adequacy of funding request and work schedule to meet project objectives; Co-funding is necessary, and submissions to other sources of funding should be described.
  • A one-page CV of the project leader is required showing indicators of scientific productivity and management, which could include: summary of publications by type, standard bibliometric indicators, past project direction, …

The proposal (in French or English) must fit within a maximum of four A4 pages (standard font 12), plus a one-page CV and an additional one-page detailed budget (official price estimates must be added to the 4-page submission). Longer proposals will not be examined.

Proposals should be uploaded as a single pdf document on the submission site Nuxeo (https://nuxeo.univ-cotedazur.fr) in the following folder : “Fil de l’eau – Académie 3” of the “Plateforme pour le dépôt de manifestations d'intérêt, d'appels à projets et de projets”.

Please also send a pdf copy of your proposal to the chairs of the Academy 3 steering committee: academie3-copil@listes.univ-cotedazur.fr

Appel à projets 3 - 2019

3ème Appel à projets de l'Académie " Espace, Environnement, Risque et Résilience" (clos)

The First Phase of the Idex UCAJEDI proposal will end April 2020. At that time, the ANR will decide whether or not the UCAJEDI proposal is extended for another four year period. The Academies thus have 2.5 years left to foster high-level, innovative, trans-disciplinary research and training activities that will turn UCA into a high profile international research university (see prior calls). To date, Academy 3 has funded 26 projects involving most UCA partners for a total budget of about 500 k€.

Today, Academy 3 of UCAJEDI is launching its third, and perhaps last, call for proposals (deadline April 05 2018). The philosophy of this third Call is different from that of the prior Calls. The objectives remain the same –support projects that can grow into larger national and international activities in order to enhance UCA’s strength, visibility and attractiveness – but our approach is different. The present Call is dedicated to fostering two types of projects:

  • Large, “Federative” projects on three themes at the core of Academy 3: “Relations between Environment and Sanitary hazards”, “Planet and Universe origin and physics”, “Physics of large earthquakes and related hazards”. A “Federative” proposal is expected to address innovative key scientific questions, gather a large group of colleagues from different UCA laboratories/partner institutions, have international connections and impacts, and be able to grow into larger national and international activities that will permanently transform UCA’s strength, visibility and attractiveness. Total funding for each large proposal can reach 200-250 k€ over the next 3 years. Funding can be used for operating expenses, equipment, and/or personnel (PhD student, 2 year post-doc, or other CDDs). Each proposal is expected to be coordinated by a PI consortium made up of 2 to 5 people. It is highly recommended that the proposal be discussed with the Academy 3 Steering Committee well before it is submitted.

  • Smaller, “Open” projects, on any theme of concern in Academy 3. These smaller projects must fit within the general objectives of Academy 3 (see above and end of this letter). They may be academic research projects, methodological and/or instrumental development initiatives, networking activities, or workshops. Funding can go up to ~30 k€ over the next 3 years or less (up to 60 k€ if PhD or post-doc co-funding is requested), and it can be used for operating expenses, equipment, and/or personnel.

Reminder: Small projects can also be submitted at any time to the “Fil de l’Eau” Call. These are eligible for funding up to ~10 k€ over the next 3 years or less.

The “Federative”, “Open”, or "Fil de l'Eau" projects will require the submission of a progress report after the first and second year and participation in the annual Academy 3 meeting to access funds for the following year. The progress of the “Federative” projects will need to be discussed every four months with the Academy 3 Steering Committee.

Proposals will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Coherence of the project with the thematic priorities of Academy 3 (see end of letter);
  • Strength, visibility and attractiveness of the project, nationally/internationally;
  • Potential of the project to foster and shape new collaborations in the framework of UCA or nationally/internationally;
  • Trans-disciplinary character of the project. The active participation of at least 2 labs or members of UCA with letters of agreement to participate will be viewed positively;
  • International character of the project. An “international” project involves at least one foreign partner with a letter of agreement to participate in the project;
  • Participation of public or private partners; a letter of agreement to participate in the project would be appreciated;
  • Adequacy of funding request and work schedule to meet project objectives.
  • If personnel funding is requested, justification (contribution, duration) must be made clear.

The “Federative” and “Open” proposals must fit within a maximum of 6 and 4 A4 pages, respectively (standard font 12) (English is preferred). An additional one-page detailed budget must be added to the proposal, and official price estimates can be included. Another supplementary page must provide the resume of the project PI (or PIs). Co-funding is encouraged, and submissions to other sources of funding should be described where relevant. If relevant, the proposals can be submitted to several Academies, provided that the principal Academy is well identified. For the "Fil de l'Eau" format, see the call on the Academy 3 web page.

Proposals should be uploaded, before April 5, 2018 (12 pm), as a single pdf document, on the submission site nuxeo.univ-cotedazur.fr. Evaluations will be provided in Early June 2018.

The proposal will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Coherence of the project with the thematic priorities of Academy 3; Strength, visibility and attractiveness of the project, nationally/internationally; Significance and innovative characteristics of expected results;
  • Potential of the project to foster and shape new collaborations in the framework of UCA or nationally/internationally, and hence to grow into a larger proposal capable to permanently transform certain contours or activities within UCA;
  • Transdisciplinary character of the project. The active participation of at least 2 different labs or member institutions of UCA (with letters of agreement) will be viewed positively. Complementarity of the partners involved in the project should be described;
  • International character of the project. An “international” project involves at least one foreign partner with a letter of agreement to participate in the project; the partner's role should be explicit;
  • Participation of public or private partners; a letter of agreement to participate in the project would be appreciated;
  • Adequacy of funding request and work schedule to meet project objectives;
  • A one-page CV of the project leader is required showing indicators of scientific productivity and management, which could include: summary of publications by type, standard bibliometric indicators, past project direction, …

The proposal (in French or English) must fit within a maximum of four A4 pages (standard font 12), plus a one-page CV and an additional one-page detailed budget (official price estimates can be added to the 6 page submission) and letters of agreement as an annex. Co-funding is encouraged, and submissions to other sources of funding should be described where relevant. Longer proposals will not be examined.
