LAGRANGE
The J.-L. Lagrange laboratory is a Joint Research Unit of the Côte d'Azur Observatory, CNRS and Université Côte d'Azur. It is a multidisciplinary laboratory which brings together teams in astrophysics (planetary science, stellar and solar physics, galaxies and cosmology), fluid mechanics, signal and image processing and instrumentation for astronomical observations at high spatial resolution and high dynamic range. Cross-disciplinary skills in high performance computing are at the heart of the teams' capacities to develop new theories and models and to compare them with observations acquired on large telescopes on the ground and in space. The laboratory heads a European consortium developing MATISSE, a second generation instrument for ESO's VLTI interferometer, currently being installed in Chile. A remote control facility for the CHARA / VEGA interferometer located at Mount Wilson in California is available at the Calern Observatory. The laboratory is also involved in several space missions, particularly ESA’s Gaia mission, in which it has a major role in the data processing and analysis, and the EUCLID mission. A strong R&D program supports future instrumentation programs. The laboratory places an strong emphasis on training, piloting the new MAUCA master’s degree, welcoming doctoral students in international collaborations, with many long-term visitors to the laboratory, and organizing several international conferences each year.
