Introduction

How do children learn a language? Why are languages different? Language is a very paradoxical field: we all handle it on a daily basis but we usually know only a few superficial aspects of it (such as grammar and spelling rules). Language science contributes scientific answers and and in-depth knowledge of the functioning of languages and human language.

Ability to think about language heard and produced, both orally and in writing: fine identification of language standards, understanding and management of implicit language and presuppositions, knowledge and identification of language problems in young children and foreign learners. In-depth linguistic study of the functioning of language (sounds, words, sentences, speeches) and linguistic theories. Database creation, management and use.

Observe, analyze and understand how the different components of language function: from the smallest units of sound (phonetics, phonology) and meaning (semantics) that compose the words (morphology, lexicology) to sentences (syntax), texts (textometry), speech (logometry) and the context in which they are used (enunciation, pragmatics). Examine typical and atypical processes of language acquisition and language learning in children and adults. Study linguistic variations in time (diachrony) and in space (sociolinguistics, dialectology).
