Introduction

The Migration Studies track offers a progressive specialization within the Master’s program in International Law and European Law.
In the first year (M1), the program is built on the fundamental principles of international law and European law, while also providing advanced modules in these two areas. It also offers an initial introduction to migration studies, taught in English and approached from a multidisciplinary perspective.

In the second year (M2), the program is entirely dedicated to migration issues, examined through an interdisciplinary approach that combines law, political science, and the social sciences, as well as international perspectives. It is the only M2-level program in France focused on migration studies that is taught in English.

The Migration Studies track focuses on a crucial issue in today’s world: the impact of migration and diversity (cultural, religious, etc.) on contemporary societies. The movement of people, ideas, and practices, along with the increasing diversification of societies, has had significant effects on legislation (national, European, and international), public policies, and on both individual and collective social experiences. The establishment of this multidisciplinary Master’s program in Nice, a border and cosmopolitan city, benefits from a strong tradition of research in the history and sociology of migration, as well as from a rich network of local associations engaged with these issues.

The Master’s program is based on active learning, combining lectures, seminars, and practical activities to develop skills in conducting empirical research, producing and promoting rigorous analyses, and managing institutional or non-profit projects.

It provides an excellent level of training, preparing graduates for careers in international and European organizations, local, national, and international public administration, NGOs, and the media.

Strengths of this Master:

  • Advanced expertise in political science
  • A multidisciplinary integration of law, political science, and social sciences
  • M2 level entirely taught in English
  • Small class sizes for personalized support
  • Guest seminars with invited professionals and academics specialized in migration.
  • Invited lectures with internationally recognized academics.
  • A local environment affected and shaped by migratory processes.
  • Practical training including field visits and legal clinics, which includes a period of internship.
  • Direct connections with research activities of three research centers (URMIS, ERMES, LADIE)
  • Opportunities for study, research, and internship experiences abroad.
  • An international network for studying migrations abroad in Europe (https://www.eumigs.eu) and outside Europe.

Partnership

ERMES (Research Team on the Mutations of Europe and its Societies, linked to the Department of Political Science) brings together political scientists, public law specialists and legal historians, who question the construction and transformation of territories and political identities, and the evolutions of the European political and legal space, especially in relation to migration processes.

LADIE (Research Center in International and European Law) focuses on migrants and refugees’ rights, international humanitarian law, human rights law, security issues, the fight against transnational crime, the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union, EU immigration policy. It took part in several European projects, including an INTERREG program funded by the European Union on “The EU and the Law of Migrants and Refugees”, in collaboration with the Institute of International Humanitarian Law of San Remo-Geneva (2008-2012).

URMIS (Migrations and Society Research Unit, linked to the Department of Sociology), was one of the first research centers in France to develop social science approaches to migrations and interethnic relations. It is a joint research center of the University of Nice, the University of Paris Diderot, the Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD) and the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). URMIS brings together researchers from various disciplines and is a unique space for debate and comparison, while also sharing a common theoretical understanding of national, ethnic and racial groups as social constructions.

Program

Semesters 1 & 2 of the Master’s program provide in-depth training in international law and European law, while also including advanced seminars in both areas. These courses, taught mostly in French, are common to all tracks (6). They aim to strengthen students’ skills and knowledge in the major fields of international and European law: European Union litigation, international litigation, international migration law, international economic law, private international law, and EU external relations law, among others.

The M1 year also offers an initial specialization in migration studies through two multidisciplinary courses taught in English (“Introduction to Migration Studies” : 62 hours over the year) and another compulsory course taught in French in international migration law (30 hours).

Optional courses (Switch courses) can also be chosen on migration-related topics (notably “Migrating Through the Ages” in the first semester) or on related themes such as “Gender and Inequalities.”

English language courses help students prepare for the transition to courses taught entirely in English in M2.

Semesters 3 & 4 provide advanced training fully dedicated to migration issues. All courses are taught in English. These topics are addressed through both disciplinary courses and interdisciplinary thematic seminars. Students acquire methodological skills in research, data production, and data analysis, and develop project management skills through dedicated courses and training experiences.

Both courses and seminars rely on the active participation of students. The assessment methods reflect this approach, favoring continuous assessment and the submission of individual assignments at the end of the semester.

Mandatory internship of at least 3 months, to be completed between April and October of the M2 year.
Students wishing to pursue a career in research may write a research thesis instead of completing an internship.

Full time

Number of training hours per year:
  •     M1: 410 hours lectures + 125 hours tutorials
  •     M2: 272 hours (excluding internship or thesis)

The Master's program relies on students active participation. Therefore, presence in Nice is required from September to June (M1- first year) and from September to the end of March (M2-second year).
