Introduction

TheMaster’s in Fundamental Physics & Applicationstrains professional scientists, able to evolve in the practice of fundamental research with the approach of an engineer. It opens the possibility of carrying out a doctoral thesis in (astro)physics in France or in Europe, and possibly an industry cotutelle. Graduates can also apply for R&D engineering positions of great versatility and adaptability. The master’s program consists of two track exploring two branches of physics at opposite scales: MAUCA track: Astrophysics of UCA Training program in modern astrophysics supported by the laboratories of the Université Côte d'Azur (UCA), Thales Alenia Space and foreign partner universities. OAM track: Waves, Atoms, Materials General training program in physics (microscopic, macroscopic) in the themes of the physics laboratories of the Université Côte d'Azur.

The general skills that the master’s program seeks to develop are: 1. The acquisition of knowledge in modern physical and astrophysical theories, their modeling as well as the associated experimental techniques. 2. The critical implementation of a creative scientific approach by choosing theoretical or experimental tools adapted to carry out a research or development project. 3. The expression of the results from scientific work in different forms (oral, written) in front of different audiences in French and in English. 4. The development of scientific autonomy as well as the ability to interact, to confront ideas, to get involved and enrich oneself during teamwork. 5. The mobilization of knowledge and know-how as part of a research and development project. 6. The identification of specificities and aptitudes, their advantages, their limits and their range of action, and the ability to make choices for improvement (self-criticism, independent training).

The master’s program consists of two distinct tracks: The OAM track offers general training in physics(microscopic, macroscopic) in the themes of the Physics laboratories of Université Côte d'Azur. The MAUCA track is a training program for modern astrophysics. It brings a set of specific theories and techniques, as well as their applications, to major instrumental projects and space missions in the coming years. This course is based on laboratories at the Université Côte d'Azur and the Côte d'Azur Observatory, companies from the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur Region such as Thales Alenia Space, and many partner universities abroad (Glasgow, Thessaloniki, Brussels, Turin, Liège, etc.). A specialization on the spatial/industrial aspects is possible through a dedicated program within the track. The uniqueness of these two tracks lies in immersing students directly in the research and development environment of a laboratory or a design office. The training program thus proposes different modules (called METEOR for the MAUCA track) favoring the acquisition of professional scientific experience. These modules confront students with the different facets of the work of a researcher or an engineer: short experimental and digital projects; long internships; a scientific communication module, in which students present their work to their peers and discuss the different issues of each, as regularly takes place in a research team.

OAM : INPHYNI + Campus Valrose jusqu'en 2019 INPHYNI + Campus Plaine du Var à partir de 2020. MAUCA : Laboratoires Lagrange (tous les sites), Artémis et Géoazur Thalès Alenia Space (Cannes) Plateau de Caussols, Calern, C2PU Réseau d'Universités partenaires à l'étranger.
