The goal of the Master of Mathematics is to provide high-level training for a large spectrum of mathematics ranging from pure mathematics like algebra, analysis or geometry to more applied subjects like numerical analysis, probability and statistics which allow the modelisation of complex phenomena  in finance, biology or physics.

The Master of Pure and Applied Mathematics (MPA) allows to acquire in-depth knowledge in one field of mathematics : the first year (M1, in French, joint with the Master Mathématiques Fondamentales) is generalist, while the second (M2) allows to specialize in a thematic area (Algebra and Geometry or Analysis or Probability-Statistics). This specialization makes it possible to reach the level necessary to pursue a Ph.D. thesis. After the Ph.D. thesis students can continue with an academic career at a university or CNRSINRIA...

Career opportunities

Our objective

The aim of the Master MPA is to offer high-level training in fundamental and applied mathematics, so students acquire skills ranging from fundamental mathematics such as algebra, analysis or geometry to modelisation through two options: probabilities and statistics on the one hand and numerical analysis on the other.

The career paths of our students are as diverse as the applications of mathematics in our society. Depending on the chosen path, students continue in the economic world (industrial research, finance, etc.) or pursue a PhD in research laboratories or in an industrial environment. The latter can then take apply for positions in higher education or research in private or public research laboratories.

Recruitment for doctoral contracts is very open to external candidates, with many job offers in France or Europe :

Organisation of the Master program

The first year consists of a large number of compulsory courses (taught in French) that aim to give a good general knowledge of fundamental mathematics. Students choose between the Scientific Calculation and Probability and Statistics options. The detailed program of Master 1 is here.

The second year of the Master of Mathematics is in two parts: the first is devoted to courses with written exams (standard language English, each student chooses 5 courses); the second is devoted to an internship or a research dissertation, which may take place either in the research laboratory, eventually leading to a thesis, or in a company. The student is responsible for finding his own internship, but professors can advise and help. The internship gives rise to a written report and an oral defense.

The choice of courses is a priori free among the available courses. However, to ensure a certain scientific consistency, each student will, after the first two weeks of classes, indicate the exams he/she intends to pass. To ensure the coherence of the scientific program, the courses are organized in three blocks:

  • Algebra and Geometry
  • Analysis
  • Probability and Statistics

The M2 courses will be taught in English (with the choice to pass the exam in French or English), so basic knowledge is required.

Before you apply

For the Master 1 MF-MPA, it is necessary to have a bachelor's degree in mathematics, and to have taken courses in Topology, Differential Equations, Holomorphic Functions, Algebra (field theory, polynomials, arithmetic .. .).

For the Master 2 MPA, it is necessary to have completed a bachelor of mathematics and taken courses at the master 1 level or equivalent course including mathematical units adapted to the proposed program.

How to apply ?

  • Master 1 welcomes students who have a degree in Mathematics.
  • The Master 2 MPA welcomes students with a M1 in mathematics with modules equivalent to those of the Master 1 MF-MPA and also, in some cases, students with an M1 equivalency.
  • Applications for the 2020-2021 academic year are open from May 15 to June 15 for the Master 1 and from May 15 to July 15 for the Master 2 MPA. They are done via the e-candidate website.
  • For students from Algeria, Argentina, Benin, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chile, China, Colombia, Comoros, Congo, South Korea, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Egypt, United States, Gabon, Guinea, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mauritius, Mauritania, Mexico, Peru, Democratic Republic of Congo, Russia, Senegal, Singapore, Taiwan, Togo, Tunisia, Turkey, Vietnam, your registration must pass through Campus France and follow their procedure.

Once the application is accepted ?

In case your application is accepted, enrollment is then completed with the administration.

Pre-registration for the year 2020-2021 is between May 15 and June 15 (July 15 for Master 2) on the e-candidat website. You can find information by clicking the Degree programs tab, and then use "math" as a filter. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
